The New Zealand Maritime School has an engine room installation located at MIT Otara North campus of Manukau Institute of Technology.
The engine room installation facility comprises of three 700Hp Lister Blackstone diesel engines which rotate at 680RPM, two of which are turbo charged and one is naturally aspirated. These diesel engines are fully operational and are used by students to gain a full range of operating and maintenance competencies.
Each year our students get the opportunity to strip the engines down, measuring component parts for wear and within allowable operating tolerances, and rebuild them – knowing that the engine was operable before they started, and therefore should operate again on completion.
The engine room has a range of smaller fully operational diesel engines for hands-on learning activity, as well as a selection of auxiliary ship's engine room equipment. This facility provides for quality, real-world activity-based learning for marine engineers.
Our marine engineering students also spend time in the comprehensive machine shop and welding school at Manukau Institute of Technology, developing their hand tool and machine tool competencies.
